Izakaya: Kyoto

Dinner at Potoncho: Izakaya, originally uploaded by snapperwolf*.

Travel is a journey punctuated by meals. One of our favorite meals in Japan (among many) was a low key Izakaya in touristy Potoncho in Kyoto.

After a long day touring temples, cherry blossom lined parks, shrines and more temples, we were more than ready to escape from the chill of the night into this hot, steamy bar. Greeted by a cheery Irrashaimase!, we were happily seated at the bar facing the teppanyaki grill. The air was thick with grease and delicious aromas. The cooks wore gumboots to navigate the slick floor and poured beer from an upturned vat. Despite this, the bathroom still had a fully automatic toilet complete with bidet. The best thing about the Izakaya is that you keep ordering until you are full and each dish is plentiful enough to share but small enough so you get to taste more dishes! Over the course of 2 dinners - we tried asparabacon (like it says), chicken karage, crumbed oysters, grilled salmon, shitake mushrooms, agedashi dofu, cheese balls! - and much more. All swift and deliciously bad.If I could have just one more piece of chicken karage and umeboshi on ice…

Sounds just completely amazing. I’m so jealous, but also really excited about your trip!
