Whistle Stop

We were in Melbourne for 35 hours. (for a wedding). We visited the very fine establishment, The Supper Club on Saturday night after a fling at Madame Brussells for a pitcher of yummy cocktails. We had to hunt to find both though. Unmarked doors and alleyways.

Madame Brussells was on the top of a non descript office block on Bourke St. It had fake grass, English lawn style furniture and there were pitchers of cocktails and cupcakes on the bar menu. Too cute.  Filled with hen’s nights and girly groups with a large rooftop terrace overlooking the Melbourne skyline. What there is of a skyline…heh.

Why don’t we have places like the Supper Club in Sydney? Somewhere discreet and elegant with well mannered and knowledgeable waitstaff. Where you can order a fancy ham and cheese sandwich and a bottle of French wine. Where the cheese boards come with slices of green apple and a walnut half in shell.  It was fun pretending to be chic and carefree, sipping on wine in goblets and eavesdropping on other conversations. Maybe I’m just old now, but this seemed a far more civilized way to spend an evening.

The next morning, we fronted up to St Ali for brunch. J’s choice due to its coffee reputation. I had a very lovely combination of fried eggs, zucchini fritters, haloumi, beetroot dip and baby spinach leaves. What a delectable combination! Again, it was almost impossible to find the place had we not had GPS directions, hidden in an obscure alleyway in South Melbourne. It was teeming with people on Sunday at 1030am. The coffee was excellent, but I am not a coffee connoisseur. I just enjoyed it.

Melbourne, you always manage to surprise me. Lots of love and see you soon, Me.

Good to hear a taste of Melbourne impressed!

I hear that the difference between Melbourne bars and Syders, is that we down here have licences for little hole-in-the-wall kinda places, and Sydney doesn’t….may be one of those Syders/Melbourne rivalry myths…
